British Virgin Islands
Smile, you've come to the. “Bitter End.” It's a phrase old
salts and Pirates used to describe the last inches of an
anchor rode, about to slip over the side. Nothing more
bitter than that. Then it came to mean the last drop in a
Pirate’s rum flagon. Or now, the final escape to sanctuary.
In the British Virgin Islands, however – hardly a round shot
off the bow from Puerto Rico and St.Thomas – The Bitter
End means a great place to relax, in your sailboat or a
gorgeous hillside Pirate's lair overlooking the harbor.
That’s what started some 40 years ago when Myron and
Bernice Hokin landed at the rustic little pub with its few
cottages; a tiny respite by pioneer Basil Symonette.
In a few years they had coaxed it to blossom as one of
the finest yacht havens in the Carib. Today you may be
lounging on the deck of your cruising yacht – either yours
or from the charter fleet at Tortola – enjoying a glorious
sunset; or the cantilevered deck of your hillside cottage.
You’ll feel it: joy, happiness, that rush of “So glad we
chose this island.” As you gaze out at this Caribbean
paradise, this is an ocean pearl in the British Virgins.
It boasts a fine clubhouse, dockage/slips for 20 yachts up
to 200 ft., and 70 moorings in Virgin Gorda’s placid North
Bay. Perched on the mountainside overlooking the busy
harbor, it’s set amid colorful flocks of bougainvillea and
tropical flowers. Amenities for travelers include 89
accommodations with beach front cottages, hillside suites,
and live-aboard Freedom 30 yachts.
The swimming pool is set off by itself, with its own
beach. Several excellent restaurants serve a great variety of
tropical delights, from Caribbean seafood to steaks.
The yachting center offers a full menu of yachting and
boating activities and instruction, administered by a coterie
of eager and athletic experts.
Ashore there are the Clubhouse Steak Grille, Carvery
Restaurant, English Pub, Captain Queeg’s Trading Post. #

Virgin Gorda
The island of Virgin Gorda, with a 1,400 population
spread over 15 square miles of mountains, is one of the
BVI’s most popular vacation destinations. It offers 20
beautiful and near-deserted beaches as well as its own
national parks. Several resorts in addition to Bitter End dot
the landscape, from the very plush Little Dix Bay to Mahoe
Bay, Biras Creek Resort and Leverick Bay Villas. Also,
Loblolly Villa, Saba Rock just off Eustatia Island.
Rent a Jeep in Gun Creek, drive to North Sound and up to
Gorda Peak National Park at 1,359-ft.elevation.
Gaze down at the aquamarine Caribbean, with Yacht
Harbor in the distance, and a tiny airstrip for small planes.
Savannah Beaches; while Spanish Town is close to the
magical, megalithic and labyrinthine stones at The Baths
grotto, Devil's Bay and the Caves. There’s also an ancient
1800s copper mine. For fishermen, blue marlin stalk your
baits in the ocean; as snorkelers revel right off the beach.
Nearby Anegada isle is the site of “Wreck of the Rhone,”
a ship which foundered in 1867; and also touts Ginger
Island’s "Alice in Wonderland" dive. #
