Nevis / St.Kitts
"Brigadoon" the Broadway hit that rose up from the
mystery of the past, winsome, enchanting, as the
storybook land of love; would appear only every few
hundred years. But here on Nevis, the fantasy of escape
settles in early, as a halo of grey-white mist, to wreath the
jutting, near mile-high volcanic cone of Mt. Nevis.
Soon, the sun transforms its tranquil sea into silver flakes.
An ever present breeze soughs through soaring palms,
acacia, and breadfruit trees high on the Caribbean mountain
slope.
For two centuries this tiny island, no bigger than Disney
World, rippled with sugar cane. Hundreds of slaves toiled
to bring sweetness to the West Indies, feeding arm-thick,
six foot long canes to the monster processor. The machine
still waits there, red with rust and spotted with mold,
hunkered down in its own industrial beauty; a 30-foot
stone tower of iron and steel grinding wheels. Massive,
surreal, a lingering icon from yesteryear.
A claim to fame is that Alexander Hamilton, one of the
principal founders of the U.S., was born there, before
leaving for America at a young age. His former home is
now a museum. Columbus discovered the island and
named it, mistakenly, for the white cloud-vapor wreath on
its mountain, with the Spanish word for snow.
But the isle has transformed itself. The manor houses
remain, lovingly redone into hotel-guest houses. Grounds
bloom with thousands of flowers. The 1600-something
ambiance lolls in the air, now hospitable, eagerly accepting
guests from U.S. and European capitals.
The people of Nevis are cordial, happy in their
independence from England (1983); and eager to attract
tourists to their seven-mile-long beach, turquoise sea, and
quaint, old world style. Here is a true getaway, a haven to
step back and collect oneself, revel in the quietude of true
tropic bliss, sans the traffic jams and hullabaloo of some
island groups.
Yet still vividly Caribbean
There are five plantation inns on Nevis, all independently
owned and operated, each with its own unique personality.
Most boast meeting rooms and audiovisual facilities, as
well as resort size swimming pools, cozy restaurants, and
standard electronic communications.
One of the great charms of Nevis is that it’s not so easy
to get to. You fly into St. Martin, or Antigua, for a short
hop by small plane or take a 20-minute ferry ride from St.
Kitts. Its airport is 8 miles from the capital, Charleston,
over a rocky road. Served by several small airlines and
Carib Express, as well as Liat. The only “cruise ships” that
pause here are the Barefoot Cruises sailing yachts, which
anchor offshore, while their passengers come in to party.
Hotels include a luxurious Four Seasons with 196 rooms
and all resort amenities, though more expensive than most
others. It stands out as a giant departure from the island’s
langourous past, a leap into modern tourism.
The Mount Nevis Hotel rests up high on the mountain.
Once a lime plantation, it retains its quiet, elegant stance,
and insists on casual dress for dinner, but no shorts or T-
shirts after 6 p.m. There’s also a beach club.
Montpelier Plantation Inn is also high up on the mountain,
with 17 rooms and a huge swimming pool. Old school to
the core, its atmosphere and decor is like a knight’s refuge.
The ambiance sports blooming tropical gardens as well as a
private beach.
Nisbet Plantation has 36 rooms and cottages, in addition
to its romantic old Caribbean Great House, on a former
coconut plantation.
Oualie Beach Hotel offers small but well decorated beach-
front cottages.
Charleston is a compact but entertaining small town, with
shops, museum and an art gallery. Nevis’ annual summer
festival is in July-August, with lilting traditional Caribbean
music and dance, where you can join in and “Feel de
Riddim.”
