St.Thomas, USVI
St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands
Some in-the-know travelers claim this mountainous green
spot is truly “The American Paradise.” The U.S. Virgin
Islands are unlike any other domestic destination (closer
than Hawaii), looming mountains surrounded by turquoise
shallows and the depthless ultramarine blue seas.
The USVIs exude their own magic in a paradise that Eden
must have been patterned after.
St. Thomas may seem a trip to another planet ...
breathtaking scenery common as looking over at a
neighbor’s yard, but more beauty per square foot than the
finest arboretum.
Ghosts of Bluebeard, Captain Kidd, and Sir Francis Drake
figure into the mix. Allegiance to a succession of nations
left is mark in the ancient buildings and alleyways.
Yet, the lushness will wow even a tenth-timer.
A case in point: Renaissance Grand Beach Resort, away
from the bustle, fully a luxury place to stay, but an
affordable one. Thirty-four acres, rolling hills, 290 rooms,
meeting the water’s edge and a thousand-foot white beach.
It was totally refurbished after its latest hurricane
adventure, which left a legacy of damage throughout the
island.
This, and many other resorts, boast full meeting facilities
and ultimate electronic communications. St. Thomas is
wired in, and wireless, to the world.
From your resort, schedule sailing, diving, golf at the
magnificent Mahogany Run course, plus any sort of foray
into town for shopping or dining.
Not to be missed is an island tour, which gives a fine
overlook of the spectacular oval-shaped harbor, bustling
with cruise ships, charter boats, private yachts from the
world’s far corners.
“Drake’s Seat” perches atop the main mountain, a granite
slab named the lookout of Sir Francis as he watched for
marauding Spanish gunboats. From there you can gaze at
infinity as the strikingly colored waters lead from one
dazzling island to the next; both American and British VIs in
the panorama.
For every kind of water sport, St. Thomas is perhaps the
finest base in the Caribbean, including sail and power boat
rentals or charters. In saltwater fishing, it has no peer;
claiming 24 world records, with swaggering 300 to 700
pound blue marlin, some topping 1,000. The famed North
Drop fishing ground is a short motor ride from both St.
Thomas and St. John, for heart-stopping action. From St.
Croix, the Long Bank is another booming prime area.
Gift buyers love the treasure shop at Mountain Top (elev.
1556 ft.), which boasts everything from trinkets to serious
presents for all ages.
Magen’s Bay is also viewed from the top, a perfect slice
of sugar white sand facing a sapphire bay, surrounded by
towering coconut palms. Once part of a vast copra
plantation, it's now an idyllic tropical beach.
A side trip, sailing to the British island Jost Van Dyke for a
full day’s outing, is peaceful yet exhilarating aboard a very
stable catamaran. Lunch on the tiny island; a quarter of a
mile of white sand backed with tropic greenery. The
barbecue and seafood are truly Caribbean.
A fun way to get there, or half a dozen other islands close
by, is to rent a Power Cat from NauticBlue. Drive it
yourself. Easy. The 37' or 44' catamaran is very stable,
roomy, and responds as easily as a driving your favorite
sedan down to the grocery. It's a lot more fun, however, to
drive across a couple of miles of mostly placid water, to
lunch or overnight at Foxy's. True island liberation!
Though St. Thomas is a mere 15 miles long and 3 miles
wide, its full array of water toys are at the ready. With
ample opportunities for diving and snorkeling, there’s also a
way to see the ocean’s treasures and stay dry.
Coral World is a unique underwater observatory, built 100
feet offshore in a natural setting. Walking below the
surface level, live reef fish can be viewed through large
window ports, in their natural habitat.
There is fine art at Tillett Gardens, good live theatre at
Reichhold Center for the Arts, on the college campus, and
delicious dining at every turn of the winding lanes and
stone stairways.
Look for Banana Tree Grille, high on the hill, featuring
Sugar Cane Coconut Lacquered Tuna, Garlic Lime Mahi-
Mahi, Salsa Chicken, or Tangerine Basil Salmon.
Shopping for Caribbean treasures awaits in Charlotte
Amalie, the capital city.
Each year in November the Charter Yacht Society presents
its show featuring up to 250 yachts to rent.
Despite the toll of a few hundred years, St. Thomas
retains its 18th century Caribbean port character. Down its
narrow cobblestone streets some of the world’s finest
jewelry, watches, crystal, and perfume provide the
treasures any swaggering Pirate would have swung, or
traded, his cutlass for.
