Grand Bahama Island
Pirates treasured their special hideouts, which provided
everything they needed while lurking for passing Caravels
loaded with gold and siver. With 700 isles to choose
from, some prowled the Gulfstream’s main traffic
pattern. Grand Bahama, with sheltered bays and easy
entries, was just north of Nassau, a main Pirate lair for
nearly 100 years.
Today, Grand Bahama has blossomed into a superlative
treasure itself, an island hideaway. A short half-day cruise
or 20-minute flight from Miami, its $30 million
international airport welcomes worldwide air-travel.
A charming aspect of the Bahamas is that some things
never change, while others, in the seeming blink of an
eye, re-invent themselves with an even more attractive,
welcoming essence. That paints a portrait of this
comfortable strip of sparkling sand. After years of so-so
tourism, its new developments and properties fulfill many
travelers dreams. It's the quickest ticket to a great
getaway.
Even so close, it is a foreign country, with a unique
flavor. But once you're there, you've escaped to your new
tranquility.
The airport is minutes from town. A designated Bahamas
Port of Entry, yachts can make the Grand Bahama Yacht
Club -- GBYC -- their first call, at the deep water entrance
of Bell Channel. Yacht slips to 175' are available for short
term, or ownership.
Grand Bahama's Marketplace is a cornucopia of flea-
market-to-Versace booty; Large hotels are nearby; 30
restaurants await your taste buds; Trent Jones golf
courses will test your mettle; first class Casinos are eager
to engage your dollar; Sugar-sand, pristine beaches and
superb diving with wild dolphins beckon, a short jaunt
away; and Gulfstream fishing is superb.
Matching those inducements, Grand Bahama boasts
more: Friendly locals, approachable government, safe
investments, new ideas. Streets are litter-free, its drivers
courteous. So much looks brand new. There you may
meet the amiable, creative organizer, a leader in the
island's modern progress, who proposes a yachtsman's
upscale route to, perhaps, dream fulfillment.
Preben Olesen, an Americanized Dane, is the catalyst
whose new Grand Bahama Yacht Club and Lucayan
Marina Village set the standard for top-drawer tranquility
aficionados. Preben is a confidante of Hannes Babak,
Chairman, Grand Bahama Port Authority; Terrance
Roberts, a Director of the Ministry of Tourism; and
Joshua Sears, Ambassador of the Commonwealth of the
Bahamas.
Lucayan Marina Village (rated 5 stars) presents
architecturally stunning townhouses -- waterfront,
beautifully designed, four-story 5,000 square feet of living
space. Condominiums are available. Its hotel offers 240
bedrooms -- actually 62, 4-bedroom suites. Manicured
grounds sport blazing red hibiscus, shade trees, coral
walkways, lavish green lawns.
Through the seemingly endless hurricanes in 2005, these
properties survived with little misfortune. "All our
facilities," he says, "are designed to withstand a wind
velocity above South Florida's stringent 150-mph codes.”
Yet there is heritage in these structures, from the architect
Christiansen down to construction crews. Much of the
design flavor has Bahamian origins.
In Nassau, these features are visible in stately historic
buildings. The craftsmen are Bahamians taught to build
fine things. They live on the island, locals, skilled
tradesmen ready for their island’s next phase; up to the
minute hotels and condoes. There’s ample room on the
island for further development.
"I'm the classic example of people we attract," Preben
says. "I came here ten years ago in my 65' Hatteras, the
Pinin Farina model." He laughs. "My retirement yacht. We
cruised the Caribbean, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, all
over. Our home was in Orlando. But we always returned
to Grand Bahama.
"With guests you don't want to cross the Gulfstream
when it's too rough. So we kept the yacht in this marina.
We'd fly over, then cruise. With residency here since
1997, we saw the beginning of this lovely property."
The current marina offers 150 slips, for rent or
investment. The second phase will double that. New
housing -- townhomes, condos -- underway, 55
waterfront acres, 300 feet deep, a whole peninsula.
A new clubhouse, beach club, hotel, a medical center
affiliated with the Cleveland Clinic; all designed in the
crisp architectural style of Christiansen, Bahamian-Danish
modern. Other large developments are underway as well.
Grand Bahama. A great place to visit; you might very
well want to live there.
